Summer ends at least three times for us. First there's the cultural ending taking place now, when semesters start and beaches close and working America hunkers down after a few slim weeks in the sun. Then there's the astronomical ending, the equinox. This year that's September 22 at 5:18 p.m. EDT, according to the modern shaman's friend, The Old Farmer's Almanac.
Samhain is our third summer's end. Throughout October we'll still get plenty of warm days, but by the 31st you can't deny that winter's on the doorstep. Sunlight gets conspicuously scarcer, storms more frequent. We've often seen snow fall before then, including a dusting at the bonfire itself in 2006.
This year's fire will be the very day of October 31. Invitations are expected to go out on the second end of summer, the equinox.
