Will ye go, lassie?

Spring came early this year—the first week of January, if Mungo remembers aright—but our Beltane invitations are going out late. The bonfire is just a month away, on Saturday, May 5.

The ancients (people much older than Mungo and Mrs. Mungo, believe it or not) divided the year in twain, summer and winter. This made sense since it followed nature's pattern of day and night, life and death, man and woman, and so on. The Beltane fire in May welcomes the season of sunlight, warmth, and love, in contrast to dark, spooky, moony Samhain (saw-when) at the end of October.

This year we're asking attendees to wear a Beltane costume if they have a mind to. Why should Samhain get all the fun? For ideas, keep in mind that Beltane is lighthearted, flirty, flowery, a time of bright colors and bubbling springs and blossoms about to burst. You can help us make that the theme of our bonfire.

The Beltane fire is a potluck affair. You may consider a small contribution toward food or drink for the crowd's refreshment. But even if you have nothing to share, please come. We crave your companionship, not your potato chips.

Sadly, we aren't able to invite non-human animals to the bonfire. Pets are extremely important to us, but we have to accommodate all attendees including those with allergies and other difficulties with animals. Please accept our sincere apologies and join us anyway.

The gathering starts at 8 p.m. and goes on until the wood runs out or the sun comes up.

We can't wait to see you all—old guests and new—on Saturday, May 5, to celebrate another season of love and another year of life.
