23 Skidoo

It's a cool night. August feels like October. My thoughts turn early to fall and bonfires. Maybe that's a good thing since the sooner I say this, the better. Maybe.

I'm pretty sure this, the 23rd Samhain bonfire, is our last.

The fire takes a lot of work and a bit of silver. As Mrs. Mungo and I reach our fifth century (we're pixies, you know), we begin to feel our age. And of course, after retiring at the usual age and living off our 401(k) for three hundred thirty-five years, we have to watch our ha'pennies.

As you see, there are a lot of qualifiers in this announcement. "Maybe." "Probably." It's not easy bringing something to an end after all these years. Our lives have been defined by these gatherings. We feel a unique closeness to everyone who has been to our fires that simply doesn't compare to any other social bond. We're not sure we can go on without marking the seasons as we have for so long.

We want to continue. We just can't do it alone anymore. We may not even have a place to do it much longer.

These are uncertainties. We could win the lottery or invent a youth serum. I don't want to close any doors. From our perspective right now, it just looks like the doors are closing anyway.

Please join us Saturday night, October 25. Let's make the 23rd bonfire the best one yet.
