Silver Samhain

This year marks the 25th Samhain bonfire, the silver anniversary, the anniversary of the moon.

It's a new moon the night of the bonfire. She follows the sun too close to be seen. So we will build a fire big enough to stand in her stead. It's what we do every last Saturday of October.

You are invited to join us, as you have been every last Saturday of October for the past 25 years.

It's a pagan celebration of sorts. It's a secular celebration of sorts. It's a good old party 'round the campfire, too. Wear a costume if you want. Be someone else, or be your true self. It's whatever you want it to be.

The party starts at 8 p.m. Please don't arrive before that time. Make sure you get here by 9:30, though. We expect to hold the Sacrifice then. It's the main event. You won't want to miss it.

We also have fun features like the Pumpkin Slaughter (if we can find enough victims in time), the Breaking of the Taboo, and maybe a surprise or two. And you can always count on a harvest of munchies fresh from Mrs. Mungo's kitchen.

Bring your own intoxicants and, if you're up to it, extra to share.

Bring a musical instrument or anything else that can dazzle or delight.

Bring a pumpkin or any kind of gourd if you want to take part in the slaughter. Bring a weapon of your choice to fend off gourd attacks, a sword or an ax, for example.

You know it breaks our hearts to say this, but the bonfire is for adult  humans only. Sorry, no children or pets.

This is all outdoors, so dress for it and prepare for unusual, unexpected weather. Snow, rain, summer ... we have seen it all at this bonfire. Also, you'll definitely end up smelling like smoke.

Keep the date free. You probably know where the bonfire is held and how to get here, but for more details, email us at samhainfire@live.com.

We'll be looking for you under the invisible new moon.
